SUFFOLK COUNTY

Suffolk County has a population of about 1.5 million and is divided into 10 towns: Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Smithtown, Southampton, and Southold.

According to Forbes Magazine, Suffolk County is among the top 25 richest counties in America and the safest region in the United States, with the lowest crime rate.

New York State property taxes measured as a portion of personal income are 28% higher than the national average and per capita property tax burdens are 49% higher.

By the simplest measure of property tax burden, taxes paid per household, Suffolk County has a tax burden that is twice the New York State average.

Property tax is based on a locally determined property valuation process – assessment. Assessment quality varies throughout the State. In many areas, properties with similar market values have very different assessments and taxes. Recent information shows that only 2/3 of assessing units in New York are achieving satisfactory uniformity in residential assessments. Suffolk County is one of three counties with the biggest assessment problems.
